Immersion elements usually break long before the overall heating system. There’s no need to worry if this happens, they’re easily replaceable by a qualified plumber or electrician.

The Immersion element is in charge of the electrical aspect of the heating process. The element heats up from your electricity feed and then heats the water in the cylinder. Sometimes your boiler will have two elements but these actually don’t work at the same time. One will be a day time element and the other a night time element.

If your element breaks there’s usually nothing wrong with the rest of the immersion; the cylinder will still be holding water and the thermostat can still monitor the heat.

Immersion Element Replacement

A broken element in a tank of water is inherently unsafe. If your immersion isn’t heating, the element is the likely cause. However, that’s not always the case.

If the thermostat is broken it may not be heating because the thermostat is telling the boiler it’s already hot — even when it’s not. The sure-fire way to know if your immersion element has gone is your fuse board. While older fuse boards won’t notice the immersion breaking, newer models will usually turn off all the power in your house.
