Immersion elements usually break long before the overall hot water cylinder. There’s no need to worry if this happens, they’re easily replaceable by a qualified plumber or electrician. Here at immersionheater.ie we can either replace the element or the overall cylinder depending on the condition of both.
The Immersion element controls the electrical side of the heater. The element heats up from your electricity feed and then heats the water in the cylinder. Sometimes your boiler will have two elements but these actually don’t work at the same time. One will be a day time element and the other a night time element. These can be particularly useful if you use your hot water late at night or have an E7 Economy Time Clock that can utilise night rates for morning and daytime use. If your element breaks there’s usually nothing wrong with the rest of the immersion; the cylinder will still be holding water and the thermostat can still monitor the heat.
If your immersion isn’t heating the element is the likely cause. However, that’s not always the case. If the thermostat is broken it may not be heating because the thermostat is telling the boiler it’s already hot even when it’s not or it may refuse to heat without the thermostat depending on what way it breaks. The sure-fire way to know if your immersion element has gone is your fuse board. While older fuse boards won’t notice the immersion breaking newer models will, usually, knock off all the power in your house.
This is a precaution – a broken element in a tank of water isn’t entirely safe so the fuse board will cut the power to your house. 90% of the time this happens and you have an immersion, the element has broken and if your water won’t heat and the lights won’t come on you can be 99% sure.
